This one almost killed me!
"Okay, I'll go another weekend in a row! But can we make it an easier hike? I've been dancing all week, I'm sore and this stuff is HARD!" Fire in Banning creeping up to Angeles Oaks prevented us from going back to my favorite hike so far, so we or should I say HE decided it was back to Joshua Tree we go...
Now take a look at that trail. Do you see what I see? SAND! Hot and sunny and SAND! Dang it's hard to go uphill in Sand, I am really hoping the whole trail isn't like this...
An hour in, and yes it's still sand. Time to change to my new nifty shoes. The instructions say to ease into getting used to these because you will use your feet, toes and ankles differently. YES, that is exactly what I want to do. Finally, I can feel the ground and grip the rock and adjust my balance. BUT, BUT, BUT, was I supposed to try these new wonders in four hours on SAND! I don't think so.
Black Rock Canyon - Joshua Tree - I was told it wasn't a very long hike and not any steeper than we had done in the past. Wait, wasn't this supposed to be an EASIER hike today??? This seemed to be the hardest of all. I'm guessing the heat, sand and sore body to start with was the deadly combination. Not to mention having "Ol' Slave Driver" as a hiking companion.
By this time, my legs and back were cramping and all I could think of was how I had to make it down the hill so I could "KILL" Ol' Slave Driver. Easier Hike, my A..! Hey, but stay tuned, the next hike is by far our longest, highest climb and the most beautiful... You'll love it!
